UN says its Gaza warehouse damaged in Israeli air strike

The United Nations said Israeli strikes on Gaza have continued despite the ceasefire and that a UN warehouse in Khan Younis was damaged in an air strike today. No UN staff were hurt, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Shirin Yaseen said at a daily briefing.

Yaseen also reported that roughly 100 Palestinian families lost tents and belongings in fires caused by Israeli air strikes last week, and called on Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid and to fund relief operations.

UN warehouse hit in Khan Younis

Yaseen said UN humanitarian partners reported that a UN-owned warehouse in Khan Younis, in Gaza, was damaged by an Israeli air strike. "Fortunately, no UN staff were injured," Yaseen said.

The incident came as Israeli attacks on Gaza continue despite the ceasefire, according to the briefing on the latest situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Families lose shelters and aid remains short

Last week, Yaseen said, about 100 Palestinian families in Gaza lost their tents and other belongings in fires started by Israeli air strikes. UN humanitarian partners are working to support those families, Yaseen added.

Yaseen said Israel continues to restrict humanitarian aid entering Gaza and called for the restrictions to be lifted and for funding to support relief operations. Asked by an Anadolu Agency reporter whether the UN was pressing Israeli officials on the restrictions and what response it received, Yaseen said: "Of course, the channels are always open, but we cannot secure full access to Gaza, and we cannot reach people in need without talking to all parties."

Entry points needed open

Some aid is getting into Gaza but the volume is not enough, Yaseen said. "We need more, and all crossing points need to be open, but for now we are working with what we have," Yaseen said.

Displacement and destruction in Hebron

Yaseen said Israeli pressure on the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank continues, with about 3,000 Palestinians still displaced from two neighborhoods there. "Israeli forces are still operating in these neighborhoods, closing access roads and imposing tight movement restrictions," Yaseen said, adding that Israeli forces continue to block Palestinians' access to livelihoods, education and health services.

Yaseen renewed a call for the protection of Palestinians across the West Bank. "Those who have been displaced must be allowed to return voluntarily and safely. Further forced displacement and demolitions must be prevented," Yaseen said.

Attacks on mosques condemned

Asked about attacks by Israelis seeking to seize Palestinian land on 14 mosques in the West Bank this year, Yaseen said such acts were "unacceptable" and that places of worship must be kept safe and religious freedom guaranteed not only in that area but everywhere.
