Deniz: Good morning everyone, and happy Monday. This is Turkey Brief Daily for October nineteenth. Today we're covering a dramatic canyon rescue in Isparta, an update from Fenerbahçe on Asensio, a major rail milestone, and a big Turkish energy investment abroad.

Maya: Morning everyone! Let's start with the breaking news — and it's a serious one.

Deniz: Right. In the Isparta Governor's Office says a group of fourteen IHH volunteers from Istanbul went missing in the Yazılı Kanyon area of Sütçüler district. Search and rescue teams using drones located the group and found one person dead. Three of those stranded were brought out.

Maya: Oh, that's devastating. And what about the rest?

Deniz: Efforts to reach the remaining ten people were halted overnight because of darkness and the steep, rugged terrain. They're set to resume in the early morning. Governor Abdullah Erin told journalists the victim likely died from drowning in the stream. He said eleven of the fourteen people in the group are professional mountaineers.

Maya: So even experienced people got into trouble there. The terrain must be really difficult.

Deniz: Exactly. We'll be following this closely.

Maya: Moving to football — there's been a lot of talk around Fenerbahçe and Marco Asensio.

Deniz: Yes. Football Director Oğuz Çetin went on FB TV and said there is no problem between Asensio and head coach İsmail Kartal. He dismissed the speculation as untrue. Club doctor Ahmet Kulduk confirmed a cartilage lesion behind the kneecap was found on an MRI, and that Asensio will undergo surgery next week.

Maya: So no rift — just an injury. Good to have that cleared up.

Deniz: Right. Çetin also said a full family atmosphere has been created at the club, and the president has been careful not to repeat what he called another 'Alex incident.'

Maya: A reference Turkish football fans will understand instantly. Okay, next — infrastructure.

Deniz: The Yerköy-Kayseri high-speed rail line has passed fifty percent physical construction. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu says the 142-kilometer double-track line will cut rail travel between Ankara and Kayseri to one hour and forty-five minutes.

Maya: Hm, that's a big change. And it connects to the Ankara-Sivas line, right?

Deniz: Exactly. It brings Kayseri into the high-speed rail network. Designed for speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour.

Maya: And our last story is going abroad.

Deniz: Kazancı Holding plans to invest about two hundred million dollars in Uzbekistan's electricity distribution sector over the next two years. Their Aksa Elektrik unit already runs the distribution network in Samarkand under a thirty-year concession and is looking at three more regions.

Maya: Hm, that's a big number. And they met with the Uzbek president?

Deniz: Chair Cemil Kazancı discussed the plans with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the first Council of Investors in the Fuel and Energy Sector in Tashkent. Talks covered modernizing Uzbekistan's electricity infrastructure.

Maya: Turkish energy companies really seem to be expanding across Central Asia. Right, that's our Monday roundup. Head to turkeybrief.com for the full stories on everything we covered. See you tomorrow!

Deniz: Have a good one, everyone.
