Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces carried out a large overnight strike on targets in Ukraine using precision weapons and drones launched from land, air and sea, hitting metallurgy plants, energy infrastructure and a cargo ship bound for the port of Odesa.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 15 energy facilities were targeted and that Ukraine had come under more than 320 drones and missiles since the previous evening, while emergency services reported two people killed and 45 injured.
Industrial and energy sites targeted
The Defense Ministry said Russian forces struck a large metallurgy plant in Kryvyi Rih that supplies metal products to Ukraine's military industry. In Zhytomyr, the ministry said a transformer substation that carries electricity from western Ukraine to military industrial facilities in the center of the country was hit.
In Zaporizhzhia, the ministry said the Zaporizstal metallurgy plant, owned by Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov, was struck, along with the Zaporiztransformator enterprise. The ministry said Zaporiztransformator has been under the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's management since 2022 and is used for the needs of the Ukrainian army.
A dry cargo ship carrying military-purpose cargo to the port of Odesa was also hit while sailing at sea, according to the ministry. In a separate statement, the ministry said Russian air defense systems shot down 610 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones overnight across various regions, including the Moscow region and the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
Zelensky reports heavy damage to the energy sector
Zelensky assessed the air attacks in a social media post, saying more than 15 energy facilities were targeted and describing the strikes of recent days as among the most intense against Ukraine's energy sector.
Zelensky said Russia had hit Ukraine with more than 320 drones and missiles since the previous evening and argued that Moscow is trying to leave millions of Ukrainians without electricity and heating before winter arrives. Maintenance and repair work to fix the country's electricity problems is continuing without interruption, Zelensky added.
Casualties reported by emergency services
Ukraine's State Emergency Service (DSNS) said in a written statement that two people were killed and 45 were injured in attacks carried out across different parts of the country during the night and early morning hours.
Zelensky calls for sustained pressure on Moscow
Zelensky said sanctions on Russia should not be reduced and criticized Washington over the Lindsey Graham Act, which the Ukrainian president described as designed to force Russia to end the war.
"It is important in America that everyone see what is really happening," Zelensky said, arguing that at a time when Russia is carrying out such heavy attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, the United States chose to ignore the legislation entirely.
