Rain and thunderstorms will spread across Turkey's western regions this week, with heavy downpours expected on Tuesday in areas including Istanbul, according to Hava Tahmin Uzmanı Abdullah Macit of the Meteoroloji Genel Müdürlüğü.

Temperatures in the west are forecast to fall below seasonal norms, and residents have been warned of possible flooding and waterlogging.

Heavy downpours forecast for the west

Macit told an AA reporter that showers and thunderstorms will affect the country from the western regions onward throughout the week. Rain is expected tomorrow in the western part of Marmara, the coastal Aegean and the western Mediterranean.

Precipitation will be heavy in İzmir, Muğla, Aydın and the western parts of Antalya, while it is expected to be locally very heavy and severe around Muğla and Aydın, Macit said. On Tuesday the rain will continue, with heavy falls forecast in Çanakkale, Tekirdağ, Istanbul and Bursa in the Marmara region, southern İzmir, the Antalya and Muğla areas, eastern Adana, Osmaniye and Hatay. Heavy rain will persist around Antalya and Muğla on Wednesday as well.

Macit urged residents to be careful against floods and waterlogging.

Temperatures drop below seasonal norms

Temperatures will decline along with the rainfall. Through the week, readings in the western regions will stay below seasonal norms, while in the east they will hover around or locally above seasonal averages, Macit said.

Winds are forecast to blow strongly and at times as brief storms from southerly directions along the southern Aegean coast tomorrow. On Tuesday, strong winds from the north are expected in the northern and southwestern parts of Marmara, and from southerly directions in eastern Central Anatolia.

Outlook for Istanbul, Ankara and İzmir

Istanbul is not expected to see rain tomorrow or on Wednesday, but heavy showers will affect the city on Tuesday. Macit warned that flooding and waterlogging could occur. "We expect the rain in Istanbul on Tuesday to be heavy. Floods and waterlogging may happen. We are warning our citizens about this," Macit said. The temperature will fall to 15 degrees on Tuesday and then settle around 19 degrees in the following days.

In Ankara, showers and thunderstorms will begin on Tuesday, with temperatures dropping and falling locally below seasonal norms.

In İzmir, thunderstorms, expected to be particularly heavy in the southern districts, will continue through the first three days of the week.
