EU Approves Nearly 1,600 New Sanctions Targeting Russia's Defense Industry

AI-generated illustration

The European Union has approved close to 1,600 new sanctions aimed at Russia's military-industrial complex, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

Kallas said on her account on the US-based social media platform X that the measures represent the largest expansion of the EU's sanctions list since Moscow began the war. "Europe is once again showing that it is acting in unity," she said.

More than half of the new listings are linked to the ballistic missile production chain, according to Kallas. She said the EU is making it "significantly harder, slower and more costly" for Russia to produce the weapons it uses to kill Ukrainians.
